The high school kids will take a back seat to let the middle school kids shine this weekend at the Georgia Middle School State Championships. This meet has come a long way over the years. I'm impressed by anybody who wants to start a middle school state meet, but to actually see it grow the way it has is quite impressive. From it's humble beginnings of only 217 total runners to 2090 last year and 2196 so far this year (entries close in a few hours). Simply put this has become one of the biggest meets in the state. And for good reason. It's a great course for racing, it's a great fan experience, and it shows the kids how cool cross country can be. Good luck to all racing in Cochran this weekend.
Check out the middle school rankings to see how this thing might shake out. But I would take them with a grain of salt. Middle school cross country is filled with surprises so I'm sure we will see plenty of big jumps and upsets at the meet. There are a few high school meets in Georgia this weekend as well as a couple of teams going out of state, but many teams are on fall break. So it's a little light in action. And normally the middle school meet is the same weekend as Coach Wood. So it's really fun that the GHSA pushed the high school state meet back a weekend because now that means there is no conflict here and the attention gets to focus mostly on the middle school kids for a weekend.
